“Komatsushima Minato Seafood Morning Market” offers an overflowing supply of seafood!
Located in the center of eastern Tokushima, Komatsushima City is a land rich in nature, blessed with fertile plains, calm seas, abundant water and clean air.
The waters of the Kii Channel are a treasure trove of foodstuffs, and the fishing industry has long flourished here.
The Komatsushima Fisheries Cooperative, located in front of the Komatsushima City Hall, holds a popular morning market five days a week where anyone can come and buy seafood.
Various kinds of fish at reasonable prices
Every morning at 8:00 a.m., except Wednesdays and Sundays, the Komatsushima Fisheries Cooperative Association holds the “Komatsushima Minato Kaisen Asaichi” (Komatsushima Port Seafood Morning Market), a popular place for residents to go to buy seafood.
Cars begin to enter the parking lot in front of the market one after another before 8:00 am.
As soon as the market opens, people pick out the fresh fish of the day.
Freshly caught fish are lined up at surprisingly low prices.
Six bigeye rockfish for 1,000 yen
Four good-sized filefish for 1,100 yen
4 thick hairtail fish for 1000 yen, etc.
There is a wide variety of delicious seasonal fish.
Seasonal fish are caught just before coming to market, so you can enjoy different kinds of fish every day.
Such as the unique fat striped horse mackerel, and sea robins which are not so familiar at home.
The search for fish that can only be bought here is also possible only at the morning market of the fishermen's cooperative.
Hamo (confer eel), a fish recommended by Komatsushima City
Komatsushima City has recognized hamo (conger eel) as a “Komatsushima City Recommended Fish” since 2010.
Two first-class rivers, the Yoshino River and the Naka River, flow into the Kii Channel off the coast of Komatsushima, and the rich nutrients in the seawater and the gently sloping sandy muddy seabed make it an excellent breeding ground for growing high-quality hamo.
Hamo from Komatsushima are characterized by their golden color, beautifully striped, fatty, and thick meat, and rich flavor.
They have long been highly regarded, and are widely distributed in the Kansai region, including Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe.
On the 4th Saturday of every month, "Minato Kaisen Asaichi Premium" is held, with various seasonal events such as a tuna carving show and an all-the-shrimp-you-can-stuff-in-a-bag event.
There is also a booth where you can try the limited edition "Komatsushima Tendon (rice bowl topped with tempura)", so be sure to check out the Kaisen Asaichi at the end of each month!
There is also a service where you can have whatever fish you bought cut up on the spot, so it is recommended to stop by for a casual morning market!
