1.Enjoy cheap and tasty food! A bar where local drinkers gather

The first restaurant is Yasubei, the first place that comes to mind of popular bars in Tokushima. Here customers can drink before noon and during lunch time, the restaurant is always packed with people.

Start with tender skewered chicken (yakitori) (3 sticks for 340 yen), which is a standard item on the menu. Or try tough yakitori (3 sticks for 330 yen).

The sashimi is inexpensive and delicious, and the generous portions make you want to come back again and again.

Another popular dish is stir-fried sweet and spicy liver (kimoyaki, 490yen), which has a mild flavor and a sweet and spicy sauce.

2. Soba Restaurant Sohonke Hashimoto Tomidamachi

The next place is Sohonke Hashimoto Tomidamachi, a soba noodle shop that was established in 1898. Two popular dishes are "Asiakashi Shrimp Tempura" (572 yen per shrimp) and "Dashimaki Tamago" (495 yen). The tempura and dashi broth, a specialty of soba noodle shops, go very well with a cup of sake.

The use of buckwheat broth (soba-tsuyu) is unique to soba noodle restaurants.

Just off the shores of Tokushima prefecture is a rich fishing ground for asiatic shrimps and the rich, sweet, tender meat is a characteristic of this type of shrimp. Tempura is deep-fried to order, so you can enjoy waiting to see it crackle and fry right in front of your eyes. You will be surprised at the sweetness of the red shrimp coming out of the crispy batter.

You can also enjoy locally-made sake with the labels of "Hosui" and "Naruto Tai".

3. Enjoy local flavors at Tokushima New Hakuba

3. Enjoy local flavors at Tokushima New Hakuba

At this popular restaurant, which has been in business for more than 60 years, you can enjoy dishes that are full of Tokushima flavor. In Tokushima prefecture, there is a custom of putting sweetened kidney beans in chirashi sushi. In the same way, the culture of putting sweet potato and beans (kintoki-mame) in okonomiyaki is still preserved. This is called "mametama," or "bean ball." Naruto City's specialty, Narutokintoki, is added to this dish in the Naruto Kintoki and Bean Okonomiyaki (950 yen).

The crispy baked dough, the crunchy texture of the Narukinagatoki and Kintoki beans, and the moderate sweetness are tastes unique to Tokushima. At first glance, it may seem very sweet, but customers love it because it is not as sweet as it appears..

Another reason for New Hakuba's popularity is the homemade mayonnaise that is so popular that it runs out every day. It has a mild sweetness with a hint of spicy flavor.

Put some of this homemade mayonnaise on the okonomiyaki.

This is “Kamiyama no umeshu” (plum wine of Kamiyama) (550 yen) that is made from 100% oshukubai plums harvested in Kamiyama Town, an area that used to the largest plum producer in Shikoku.

The restaurant can accommodate a lot of people, so groups are welcome.
